WA Extension Educators Recently Hired

Washington State University and Columbia County welcomes Dr. Paul Carter as the new County Director/Extension Educator for the Columbia County Extension Office, effective May 1, 2005. Paul comes to the position following the retirement of long time County Extension Director Roland Schirman. He recently completed his PhD in Agronomy at Purdue University. He also holds a BS degree in Agricultural Mechanization with a minor in Farm Management and an MS degree in Agronomy.

Carter brings a strong background in production agriculture and experience with agricultural technology, and also has significant background related to Extension work. He is anxious to get acquainted with the people of Columbia County, and looks forward to working with community leaders, landowners, farmers, and families in the area.

As of April 1, 2005, Dr. Stephen Van Vleet (Steve) was hired as the Whitman County Extension Educator in Agriculture and Natural Resources. Steve has moved to Colfax with his wife and 7 year-old daughter. Steve was raised on a fruit farm in Western Colorado and attended colleges in Colorado and Wyoming.

Steve has been working in agronomy for 9 years. Steve worked in the Pacific Northwest from January 2000 to November 2002, when he was employed as a field biologist with American Cyanamid/BASF. Steve has extensive work experience with agronomic crops, biological control and rangeland weed management. He has also worked with livestock (sheep) over the past 2 years for controlling weeds on federal land. Steve is very excited to be in Whitman County and looks forward to a long working relationship with all communities in the Pacific Northwest.
