Objective

Determine the effect of winter wheat green cover on water erosion.

Description of the five sites are given in the table.

Treatments

The treatments, three different seeding dates and either two or three seeding rates plus an unseeded control, were intended to create a range of green cover values at the start of the winter erosion season. The 150-foot plots were drilled up and down slope with a furrow-type drill. The plots were not bordered, but were isolated from external runoff by digging small diversion channels just upslope from the plots. At each of the five sites, sediment collectors were installed on one plot of each seeding date as well as on the control. Voided rill measurements were collected at the end of the erosion season.

Comments

There was severe soil erosion in the general vicinity of the plots caused by rain on thawing soil. The sediment collectors, which are under development, failed to perform adequately during the season and the voided rill method was used in the spring to measure erosion. We made adjustments in the sediment collecting equipment that may solve this problem in the future. Three sites were affected by runoff from areas outside the plots, two by runoff from road areas and one by runoff from a long slope above the plots. Data from three sites showed a seeding date effect on green cover. One of these plots had 30% residue cover and was on a low slope so there was no soil loss. Results on the other two plots with green cover differences were mixed. This is the first year of a three year study.

Data

Data are given in Table 1.

Conclusions

No definite conclusions as to the effect of green cover on soil erosion can be drawn from this first year=s study. It was a learning experience for both investigators and advisors.
