Rhizobium Inoculant Comparison on Lentils

Steve & Matt Becker
with Larry J. Smith, UI/Nez Perce County Extension

Objective

To test seed applied Rhizobium bacterial inoculants on lentils

Location: Genesee, Idaho (Rimrock area)
Annual precipitation: 20 inches per year
Rotation: Lentil, wheat
Variety: Palouse

Treatment

  1. SoFast Rhizobium bacterial seed inoculant (by label directive)
  2. RhizeUp Rhizobium bacterial seed inoculant (by label directive)

Comments

Both SoFast dry formula and RhizeUp liquid formula rhizobium inoculants were applied to seed as it was being placed in the planting drill. Growing conditions were ideal for lentil production at the field test site.

Data

Yield, lb/ac

Treatment Rep 1 Rep 2 Rep 3 Average
SoFast 2600 2800 3200 2867
RhizeUp 2800 2760 3140 2900
LSD (5%)       359
CV       3.6%

Conclusion

There was no significant difference in seed yield between the two rhizobium treatments. The low CV adds additional credibility to the test results.
