Foliar Nutrient Application on Spring Barley

Glenn Leitz

Objective

Determine the effect of W/E Foligro on the yield, test weight and protein content of spring barley.

Location: Waverly, WA
Annual precipitation: 19 inches
Rotation: 94 - lentils

Treatments

W/E Foligro - ground applied to Morex barley at 6 inch stage of growth to achieve N5, P15, K3.

Check - no application.

Comments

Seeding date was late April. Foligro was ground applied; treated at an early growth stage to avoid tire tracks in the crop. This may have nullified any benefit of the foliar application.

There was severe (80%) lodging of the crop and one replication was inadvertently cut off. Plot length was 205 ft., probably shorter that desirable.

Data

Effect of Foligro on barley yield, lb/ac
Treatment Rep 1 Rep 2 Rep 3 Average
Foligro 3633 3594 4309 3845a
Check 4135 4754 4599 4496b
LSD (20%)       600 lb
CV       7.69%

Conclusion

Although the check yielded more, there was no statistical difference until the 20% level of confidence. Foligro test weight was higher than the check but not statistically significant. Protein content of the check was higher than Foligro at the 20% level.
