List Serves Procedures

PLEASE follow the procedures below on list server use and etiquette, and removing text formatting in messages sent on the list server.

USE AND ETIQUETTE

To send an e-mail message to the list server group, type the list server address (pnw_directseed@lyris.cahe.wsu.edu) in the To box, include a brief subject title in the Subject box, and then type your message (see also "Remove Text Formatting" below). If you are responding to a list serve message and your response would be of interest to others on the list, copy and paste the list server address into the TO box. HOWEVER, if you want to reply only to the person sending the message and your reply would not be of interest to the entire mailing list.... hit the reply key and the e-mail address of the original author will be inserted in the TO box. When replying to a list server message and sending it to the entire list, do not include all of the original message in your reply, but include just the text excerpts that are pertinent. Everyone's cooperation and sensitivity on these e-mail etiquette points will help avoid frustrations with volumes of unwanted e-mail. Please be selective on what messages you send.... try to keep them focused on topics related to cropping systems and technologies for direct seeding /conservation tillage systems.

REMOVE TEXT FORMATTING

Messages sent on this list server should be sent without character or paragraph formatting (e.g. bold, underlined, centered, indented, etc.). Although the formatted text may look fine in the e-mail message, when the messages are stored (archived) on the list server Internet site, formatting codes (usually numbers or words with < > or = signs) can be introduced into the text of the message, making the messages difficult to read for people accessing them through the Internet.

There are two approaches to help avoid these formatting code problems. First, please remove all the character and paragraph formatting before you copy text from word processing files into e-mail messages for this list server. Second, check your e-mail software options on sending mail and select the choice of "always remove formatting" if the message contains rich (formatted) text.

Thanks for your help on keeping the list server messages on the Internet site readable so new list server members can read and respond to messages sent before they joined. It will also help you in accessing messages that you deleted after reading your e-mail.
