1999 STEEP III Progress Report

RESEARCH TITLE:

Evaluation of varieties under direct and conventional seeding in Washington, Idaho, and Oregon.

INVESTIGATORS:

Steve Dofing, Stephen Guy, Bill Payne, Kevin McPhee, Dave Huggins.

INTERIM REPORT:

April 1999 to November 1999.

OBJECTIVES:

1. Identify spring pea varieties with superior performance under direct seeding.
2. Compare performance of pea varieties in direct vs. conventional seeding.
3. Determine if the performance ranking of pea varieties under direct seeding is different from that under conventional seeding.

KEY WORDS:

direct seeding, pea, no-tillage

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM:

Extensive information is available from variety trials on the performance of pea varieties in conventional tillage systems. However, relatively little information on variety performance is available under direct seeding systems. Growers considering adopting direct seeding require information on variety performance under direct seeding conditions to select varieties for optimum performance.

ZONE OF INTEREST:

High and intermediate rainfall zones of the Pacific Northwest in which peas may be grown successfully.

ABSTRACT OF RESEARCH FINDINGS:

Although included in the FY99 cycle, this is a Supplemental STEEP III project that was approved in the Spring of 1999. Therefore, the first field season is scheduled to begin in the Spring of 2000, and no field results have been obtained.

RESULTS AND INTERPRETATION:

No results are available at this time (see above).

COOPERATION WITH OTHER SCIENTISTS CONDUCTION RELATED ACTIVITY:

This project consists of joint research conducted by scientists in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Considerable collaboration was required to develop the proposal and plan the research that will be initiated in the spring of 2000. Bill Payne has recently accepted another position outside of Oregon, and cooperation with other Oregon State University scientist(s) will be sought.

PUBLICATIONS AND PRESENTATIONS:
